Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is FatChanceBellyDance®?

FCBD® is a modern fusion dance style that draws inspiration from North African, Indian, Middle Eastern, and Spanish dance traditions. It is an improvisational style meant to be danced in a group. Every move has a cue, allowing dancers who know the style to dance together, no choreography required.

2. What are the benefits of learning FatChanceBellyDance®?

FCBD® builds confidence, enhances body awareness, improves physical strength and flexibility, and fosters a sense of community and connection with others. You can read more about it on our Home page or on the official FatChanceBellyDance® website.

3. Do I need previous dance experience to join?

No prior dance experience is necessary! Our classes are designed to be accessible to all skill levels, from complete beginners to experienced dancers.

4. What should I wear to class?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement. Many students wear yoga pants or leggings and a fitted top or t-shirt. Bare feet, socks, or dance shoes are recommended.

5. Do I have to show my belly?

Showing your belly is completely optional in our classes, performances, and beyond. You will see some students wearing crop tops or cholis, while others prefer to keep their bellies covered. We prioritize body neutrality and respect each student’s decision to dress how they wish. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in whatever you choose to wear.

6. What kind of materials or supplies will be provided?

Each student will receive a handout of the class series curriculum to help you follow along and practice at home. Additionally, we offer practice zils (finger cymbals) for students to borrow during class. When you register for a class series, you’ll also have access to dance-along practice videos so you can review what you’re learning outside of class time.

7. Do I need to bring anything?

Comfy clothes you can move in and a water bottle is all you need to bring. If you’re a visual learner, you might want to bring a notebook and something to write with—taking notes is encouraged! If you have finger cymbals, a hip scarf, or a coin belt, feel free to bring those too!

8. How do the class series work?

FCBD® vocabulary—the word we use to describe our dance movements—becomes more complex as you learn. Our weekly 1-hour classes are taught as series and are designed to match your growing skills, starting with foundational movements in level 1 (beginner), which are necessary for the more intricate movements taught in level 2 (intermediate) and level 3 (advanced).

  • Level 1 - Foundations | 8-week series | $120 ($15/class)

  • Level 2 - Intermediate | 10-week series | $150 ($15/class)

  • Level 3 - Advanced | 12-week series | $180 ($15/class)

9. Can I drop in for a single class?

Yes, drop-ins ($20/class) are welcome, though you’ll get the most benefit from joining us in a series! Drop-ins can be especially helpful for dancers who have attended our class series before and want to review specific movements. Check our Sign Up page for drop-in registration.

10. Is there a way to try the dance style before I commit to a series?

Yes, we offer routine demo classes every few weeks to showcase FCBD® style and give you a preview of the kinds of things you’ll learn. Keep an eye on our Calendar page for dates and to register for upcoming demo classes.

11. How do I register for classes?

You can register online through our Sign Up page. If you need assistance with enrollment, contact Misty at misty@crescentdancecollective.com or via the webform on our Contact page.

12. What is your refund policy?

We are able to offer a flexible refund policy to accommodate our students’ needs while maintaining the quality of our classes. To read the full policy, click here.

13. What can I expect in your class?

Our classes provide a structured, supportive learning environment with curriculum designed to help you progress confidently through the FCBD® movement vocabulary.

Each class follows a consistent format:

  • We begin by reviewing the movements and techniques learned in the previous class to reinforce your skills and build a strong foundation.

  • Next, we move on to learning new movements and techniques, breaking them down step-by-step.

  • Finally, we enjoy practicing the new movements together to music, applying what you’ve learned to experience the joy of dancing!

14. What happens if I miss a series class?

If a class needs to be canceled (for inclement weather, instructor illness, etc.), the series will be pushed out a week or a make-up class will be scheduled for registered students.

If class happens as scheduled and you are unable to make it, there are no make-up class opportunities. However, each class includes a review of the content covered in the previous class, so students are encouraged to continue to attend the series even if they miss a class. Alternatively, make-up classes can be scheduled as private lessons if desired; see our Sign Up page for booking information.

15. Can I book private lessons?

Yes, private lessons are available. Contact Misty at misty@crescentdancecollective.com or via the webform on our Contact page to schedule.

16. Are your classes inclusive?

Absolutely! Our classes prioritize inclusivity and body neutrality, welcoming dancers of all shapes, sizes, ages, identities, and abilities.

17. Is there an age limit for your classes?

Our classes are designed for adults, but we welcome teenagers with parental consent and attendance. Please contact us if you have specific questions about age suitability.

18. What if I have an injury or medical condition?

If you have an injury or medical condition, please consult a medical professional before signing up for classes. Please let us know before class so we can work with you to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
